When it comes to the average American’s battle with weight and the waistline, one front where many of us are losing ground is the snack department. Our appetite for soft drinks, chips, cookies, candies and French fries is a major source of our seeming incessant weight gain. For anyone who wants to lose weight, developing healthy snack habits is of primary importance.

Why Chips, Fries and Cookies Are Making You Fat and Unhealthy

To understand why healthy snacking is so important, it first helps to gain a rudimentary understanding of what high-carb, fatty and sugary snacks are doing to your body.

Typical American snack foods are almost all complex carbohydrates and refined sugars. When these are ingested, your body transforms them into glucose. There’s nothing wrong with glucose in and of itself; glucose is the gasoline that your body uses to power its engine. However, too much glucose in your bloodstream quickly becomes toxic.

That’s where insulin comes into play. The job of insulin is to take glucose out of your bloodstream and store it somewhere else. When insulin runs out of room in the liver and the muscles, it transforms extra glucose into fat.

What’s more, when your body is constantly flooding your bloodstream with insulin, two other consequences occur. First, your body gradually becomes more and more insulin resistant, which eventually leads to diabetes. Second, by quickly removing all that glucose from your bloodstream, you experience the famous sugar crash or post-lunch drowsiness. These symptoms are a direct result of the unhealthy snack foods you’ve eaten.

Turn to Nuts and Dried Fruits Instead

The next time you start jonesing for a snack, reach for nuts or fruit instead of a bag of chips or a pack of cookies.

Many dieters avoid nuts because they have a high fat content. However, as you can see from the explanation above, low-fat chips or cookies that have a high concentration of carbohydrates and refined sugars will eventually be transformed into fat by the body anyway!

By contrast, the proteins and fats that make up nuts do not trigger the flood of insulin that a bag of chips or cookies cause. Proteins and fats burn more slowly in the body and are less likely to lead to the production of triglycerides and LDL cholesterol. Furthermore, because they do not lead to a sugar rush in the body, nuts don’t result in insulin resistance or the subsequent sugar crash.

Fruit is another healthy snack option. Although fruits do have carbohydrates and sugars, they are packed with nutrients and are generally considered to be easier to break down within the body than the chemically altered sugars that come in most unhealthy snack foods, such as candy bars and packs of cookies. For someone who is mostly avoiding processed carbs, fruit doesn’t overload the body with unneeded carbs and sugars.

Dried fruit is an excellent option for eating enough fruit when fresh fruit isn’t available. Unlike fresh fruit, dried fruit can be stored in a drawer or a cabinet for even months before going bad.

In conclusion, if you’re watching your weight, check how you’re snacking. If you’re consuming calorie-dense, sugar-dense or carb-dense snacks, you can trade out unhealthy snacks for natural nuts and fruits. This one change to your eating habits will make a big difference in the long-run.

A Nigerian Air Force jet fighter mistook refugees for rebels yesterday, Nigerian military said, firing on a camp in Rann, Borno State. Dozens of refugees and aid workers died.

The lowest estimate from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is of 50 dead. The BBC estimates at least 52 dead, while one Borno State official is attributed by AP as saying over 100 are dead. MSF say at least 200 were wounded.

The Red Cross said at least six of its staff died and twelve more injured. The impoverished region, in the northeast of the nation, has suffered severe famine as conflict interrupts agriculture. Farmers are unable to work owing to bombs on their land. The Red Cross said volunteers were at the camp, home to thousands, to distribute food.

The military said the Air Force was dispatched to deal with “remnants” of the Boko Haram militant group, which it claims to be in a final push against. Major General Leo Irabor, who led the operation, said, “Unfortunately, the strike was conducted but it turned out that other civilians were somewhere around the area and they were affected”. Irabor said two soldiers were amongst the dead and others were wounded.

Military spokesman General Rabe Abubakar said the military are “all in pain” after the disaster, adding “in a military operation such as this, from time to time these things do occur.” Irabor promised an investigation. President Muhammadu Buhari said he was saddened by “this regrettable operational mistake” and sought calm.

“This large-scale attack on vulnerable people who have already fled from extreme violence is shocking and unacceptable,” MSF operational chief Dr Jean-Clément Cabrol said. The Red Cross said it has staff and facilities ready in neighbouring Cameroon and Chad to assist. “The whole camp is controlled by the army and no one can come in or out without being checked,” said MSF head of emergencies Hugues Robert. Robert added the group knew travel and work in the area was dangerous, and took precautions.

Helicopters have been evacuating the wounded, including a United Nations helicopter which brought four medical personnel and 400kg (900lb) of emergency medical aid, and left with eight wounded Red Cross workers. The UN is in the midst of an appeal for aid to the famine-hit region.

A motion has been passed in the Parliament of Australia to make a formal apology to the Stolen Generations. Thousands of people converged on Canberra, the capital city, to witness the event. Many Indigenous people set up camp on the lawns outside Old Parliament House at the site of the Tent Embassy which has been on the site since Australia Day 1972.

The front doors of Parliament House opened at 7:30 a.m. with many people queuing from before 7 a.m. to gain a place inside. With the House of Representatives public gallery packed, about a thousand people watched a live telecast of the event on screens that had been set up for the event in the Great Hall. A special area was set up at the front of the Hall for members of the Stolen Generation. Thousands of others watched outside Parliament House, gathering on the lawns of Federation Square. Some members of the crowds wore t-shirts with the word “Thanks” on the front. Many more people watched at venues across the country.

All living past Prime Ministers, with the exception of John Howard, were in the chamber to witness the apology.

The Prime Minister’s speech was received warmly by the crowds and received a long standing ovation at its conclusion. During the Opposition Leader’s speech, a majority of the audience in the Great Hall and Federation Square turned their backs.

You could be looking for a possible opportunity to add to your career prospects or dream of that fat paycheck; whatever the reason may be, the advantages of an MBA degree from one of the top management and business colleges are innumerable. Even though a successful completed degree program will certainly get you what all you desire for, there are various other aspects to getting there that shape your career in a way where textbooks simply fail to guide.

This brief guide will certainly get you acquainted with the top 5 imperative yet considerably subtle things that a management program outlines which a student can do to set themselves up for success both financially and professionally.

To go outside one’s comfort zone

Students from top automobile engineering colleges in India usually fear things that they are not exposed to. The key to surviving in a field like Finance and Marketing is to build and develop on one’s skills so you can easily adapt to changes in the market conditions and be efficient and effective in various roles.

Attend those cocktail parties

Networking is one of the most essential tricks to building a career. Although it can seem forced and a little awkward in the beginning, once you get used to talking and interacting with others, you will form long-term beneficial relationships not just professionally but personally as well.

Be a part of a study group

Doing this while you’re still studying gives a sense that you are seeking help and advice without an ulterior motive, which one might think you’re out to do if you’re already working.

Revise your definition of success

Always set goals and make plans that work for you and are on par with what you want from your life. Do not define success on someone else’s terms. Create your own definition of success which will take you a long way.

Selecting the right college is a big decision, both for you and your family. It is these four years that will help decide what you will do in life. It is best to make this decision when you are in senior school, and not at the last moment. There is no right college as such, but there may be colleges that are right for you. Wikinews Australia has in-depth coverage of this issue: Australian nuclear debate

Australian Prime Minister John Howard has announced he wants a “full-scale nuclear debate”, and three of his senior federal government frontbenchers – Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, Resources Minister, Ian Macfarlane, and Environment Minister Ian Campbell – have all suggested Australia, which has around 40 per cent of the world’s known uranium reserves, should consider enriching uranium – a step in processing that would allow it to be used as reactor fuel as well as for nuclear weapons.

However there is strong opposition for nuclear power in the Australian community. The Australian Greens have rejected the Prime Minister’s assumption that nuclear power might be ‘desirable’ for Australia. The Greens say they challenge Mr Howard to show “true leadership on climate change and nuclear non-proliferation.

Greens climate change and energy spokesperson Senator Christine Milne said Mr Howard was “playing politics” by floating the idea and testing public opinion before developing a government position.

“Instead of pandering to US President George Bush and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair – the two most unpopular leaders in the world today – Prime Minister Howard should demonstrate real leadership and put some authenticity into the government’s response to climate change and terrorism,” Senator Milne said. “Nuclear power and nuclear proliferation are a threat to both.”

Senator Milne challenged advocates of nuclear power to explain what they will to do about nuclear waste, how large a public subsidy they are prepared to pay to prop up nuclear power, and why the Sustainable Development Commission was wrong when it recommended last month against expanding nuclear power in Britain.

“Australians have already had to subsidise uranium mining companies to clean up after mines have closed, while last week’s Budget papers revealed that ANSTO can’t estimate the cost of decommissioning the Lucas Heights nuclear reactor,” Senator Milne said. “When will advocates of nuclear power admit that it is too slow, too expensive and too dangerous to be a solution to climate change? Nor is there any safe way to dispose of the waste. It is not even safe to transport, a concern supported by the head of the International Energy Agency…” said Senator Milne in a media release.

“Instead of turning to nuclear power, Australia should ratify the Kyoto Protocol, invest in renewable energy, adopt a national energy efficiency target and improve public transport.

“Several studies examining options to achieve deep cuts in Australian greenhouse emissions all show this goal can be achieved, cost effectively, without resorting to nuclear power,” said Senator Milne in a media release.

Greens leader Bob Brown says the Prime Minister is sending a message of approval for Indonesia to become a nuclear power. “Australia and our region are essentially nuclear-free. Mr Howard is abandoning that security to grab uranium profits and facilitate an Australian role in nuclear enrichment,” Senator Brown said. “This robs Australia of its moral strength to argue against Indonesia resurrecting the Soeharto plan for 12 nuclear reactors and to advance its interest in Russian-built floating nuclear power stations.”

“This will make our region much less secure for the next generation of Australians,” Senator Brown said. “John Howard has talked up regional terrorism. Now he is promoting nuclear power proliferation in our neighbourhood. At best his logic is faulty, at worst he is taking Australia into a future unnecessarily menaced by the nuclear threat,” Senator Brown said.

Labor MP Kelvin Thomson says John Howard’s push towards nuclear power generation could heighten the risk of a terrorist attack. “The problem with nuclear power is that more of it that is around, the easier it is for terrorists to get access to it and I’m not satisfied that in this day and age we can be absolutely certain that terrorists can’t access it,” Mr Thomson said.

Mr Thompson said the Government should be focussing its interest on “much safer and environmentally-friendly” abundant renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power. Mr Thomson said Australia was a potential world-leader in solar power. “Surely you exhaust all the other alternatives first before you say let’s go down the nuclear road,” he said.

“The problem with nuclear power is that more of it that is around, the easier it is for terrorists to get access to it,” he said. “I’m not satisfied that in this day and age you can be absolutely certain that terrorists can’t access it.”

Union leader Bill Shorten, a federal Labor candidate at the next election, believes the issue is unpopular with the electorate. A survey in 2005 found 47 percent of Australians supported nuclear power and 40 percent opposed it.

Professor Frank Muller from the University of New South Wales, said the framework to manage nuclear power needs to be put in place first. He says it could take decades before a nuclear power plant could operate. “So it actually takes even longer to provide a greenhouse benefit than it does to build a power plant,” he said. Professor Muller says nuclear power stations are expensive to build, and safety is a major issue.

Opposition environment spokesman Anthony Albanese said: “John Howard’s nuclear fantasy is Australia’s nightmare,” Mr Albanese told reporters. “Intractable problems with nuclear energy when it comes to economic costs, safety, disposal of waste and contribution to nuclear proliferation remain up to some 50 years.”

Mr Albanese said that if Mr Howard was serious about nuclear power he should say where a nuclear power plant would be built, and where the waste it produced would be stored. “If he’s so confident that nuclear energy is safe… I’m sure he’ll have coalition MPs volunteering to have a nuclear reactor in their electorate and to store their waste in the electorate,” he said.

Mr Albanese said the current Labor policy remained opposed to nuclear energy in Australia.

Credit cards may be one of the most convenient tools to help you through life. In fact, in the American culture, credit cards have become a lifestyle. When used wisely and smartly, credit cards may actually help you in times of emergencies and also help you establish a credit history that might help you obtain a bigger loan later in life. However, if you are not careful, you might end up accumulating more debts than you can actually handle. If that should happen, you might be in need of credit card debt management help.

Learning to manage your credit card usage is one thing but learning to curb your debts may be a completely different thing altogether. How do you know if you are in need of a credit card debt management program? There are many tell-tale signs. You may need to be able to distinguish the many different bad credit card habits to see if you do need some advice on how to manage your credit card debts. One simple question is if you have been buying household groceries on your credit card. Generally you should be able to afford your groceries in cash. So if you are buying your groceries on the credit card, it probably means that you are unable to manage your finances wisely. You might also want to ask yourself if your total outstanding balances on your credit card is more than your annual income and if you even can afford to pay off that balance within a year. The rule of the thumb is that your debt should never be greater than your income. So, if you do have a balance that is more than your annual income that you can’t afford to pay off within a year, you might need some help in managing your debts and enroll in a debt management counseling program.

There are still ways for you to curb your own credit debts, by following a few simple do-it-yourself steps, which may seem easy but can be quite difficult to execute without a very strong determination. It has been suggested that the first step towards eliminating your credit card debts, is to stop using your credit card altogether. This is of course very logical because, you may not want to accumulate new debts as you are struggling to be rid of your existing ones. This may have to do with your spending habits more than anything else. You might find living on cash a bit difficult at first but, over time, you might get used to it and perhaps end up saving much along the way. It might also be a good idea for you to prioritize your spending and only spend whatever cash you have on things that you need, such as food and utilities rather than spending them on cable TV or luxurious items.

YouTube Preview Image

You might also want to consider various alternatives on how to settle or consolidate your debts. If you are having a tough time keeping track of several credit card debts, it might be a good idea to roll all your unsecured debts into one single entity and make payments to only one creditor. You may do that by getting a debt consolidation loan or by moving the balance from several cards to one single card with a lower interest rate. There are credit card companies that offer 0% interest rate cards. You have to bear in mind that consolidating your debts does not necessarily mean that you will be getting rid of your debts all at once but, you are merely buying yourself some time and allowing yourself to pay off your debts in a manner that you may be able to afford without really tightening your purse strings.

You might also want to consider putting as much as you can in every payment. If the calculated minimum payment is merely the accrued interest, it is advisable that you double that figure in order to hit the principal of the debt. It might be a bit painful at the beginning but, you might find it to be quite liberating as you may be able to pay off your debts sooner than you might expect. By hitting the principal amount you might begin to see the balance dropping steadily as you continue to make more payments.

Enrolling in a cc debt management program may also be an option especially, if you think you are a compulsive credit card user. However it is recommended that you try to manage your debts by yourself first. This is because, in most cases, the reason for being in debt in the first place lies in your spending habits. If cutting up all your credit cards might seem a little bit too extreme for you, you might want to keep only one card and preferably the one with the lowest balance. Keep in mind that it is always better to nip the problem in the bud before it gets out of hand.
